First Impressions A year ago today we made the trip to Florida for our first Floridian Christmas. The family was split up as we could not all get seats on the same flight. Both flights were to arrive at Orlando International Airport within half an hour of each other so we arranged to meet up in the main concourse at the Christmas Tree. It was here that I felt our Christmas had started. As we entered the main concourse we were greeted by an explosion of coloured lights on the biggest Christmas Tree I had ever seen and Christmas music that put us all in a festive mood even after a long flight. A Thousand and some Lights Returning after dark to sample the delights of ?The Park by Night? was a wonderful time. This visit we took the ferry over the lake to the entrance of the Magic Kingdom. It was the best way to go as from the deck in the cool, semi darkness you could see the multi coloured lights of the jetty and entrance with The Castle, magestic against the night sky in the distance. The Magic Kingdom at night has a very different feel from the daytime visit. You can appreciate the lights and decoration and the ?warmth? of the season. We found a place to stand on the upper terraces of the station area. This was a good place to be to see the parade pass. We stood at the front of the Castle to see the lighting up and the fireworks display. After a bit of a walk-about, some window shopping we bought a hot drink and found somewhere to sit. Rent a Ford Mustang Convertible
Whenever we vacation in Florida we make a point of renting a convertible during one of the weeks of our visit. This time I wanted to find something that was just a little bit ?cooler? than the usual offerings of various modified saloons. This visit was a time to check on my home and to make sure that all was in tip top condition for the coming rental season 2008. Arriving on Thanksgiving Day was a good move. I was out of Orlando Airport in about 30 minutes My first night was spent in a friends villa, we planned to try the Black Friday sales and went to Wal*Mart at 6am then back home for breakfast and then on to Eagle Ridge Mall for yet more bargain hunting. I like shopping Floridian style - I like shopping any style. It is a good way to see how things are done in the USA and most of my guests have had positive shopping experiences. Supermarkets USA Style
You?ve explored your holiday home and now need some supplies, so you?ll probably head out to the nearest supermarket. There?s never one far away in the Disney area. Your villa owner is sure to have left you information on how to find the nearest one. Publix is the most common but you?ll also find Winn-Dixie, Albertsons and Wal-Mart (Asda), the most familiar to British visitors. Most Wal-Mart stores are open 24 hrs. Cagan Crossings
Cagan Crossings is a new up and coming area on highway 27 just north of the junction with highway 192 straight across from the 24 hour Wal Mart . It is a growing development of residential apartments with a small attractive tree lined town centre. It has an interesting selection of small individual shops and restaurants that attract residents and holiday makers alike. As it is within walking distance of High Grove where our villa is we thought we had better go and explore to see what it has to offer. Anyone who is familiar with the town of Celebration will see where the Cagan Crossings town planners have obviously got their inspiration from as this is an area best explored on foot. Although it does not benefit from a beautiful lake and walking trail like Celebration the small individual shops and restaurants are more in keeping with a small town centre than a large rambling tourist area. The Food Court At Florida Mall
Normally I steer well clear from these kind of places and kind of consider them to be fast unhealthy rubbish eateries and never venture near them, heading instead for a more upmarket sit down relaxing restaurant with waiter service, but today we were kind of rushed and had places to go but you still need to eat and so we decided to give the food court a whirl inside Florida Mall. My husband had tried it 4 years ago and still remembers that it was good. I must say I was more than a little surprised , firstly at the choice on offer, such a wide variety and not only that, each eateries had hot samples on offer so you got to have a taster to tempt you before you had to make your choice. If you are bored with the usual chain restaurants or fast food and looking for somewhere to eat with a twist, this could be the place to try. Situated just off I-4 in the popular International Drive area, Texas de Brazil offers meat lovers a feast for the eyes and the stomach! Firstly it is not the usual short shorts and Disney t-shirt casual dress code, smart casual attire is more acceptable which is kind of nice for a change ? no jacket or tie required fortunately for the men. It?s worth calling ahead for a table as like most places it gets busy at peak times. Each diner is charged a set fee ? it was $40 plus tax when we visited in 2006 ? which was good value if you starve all day and eat well! Children are charged less. Water Skiing at Sammy Duvall's
There is new water ski park at WDW Contemporary Resort, I have had friends who have just done a water ski experience, they had a professional ski boat and driver, (tuition is available for the ?never ever? skier) and thoroughly enjoyed it. You can do many water activities such as waterboard, kneeboard, slalom ski on a petition caliber slalom course with water ski Champion Jodi fisher or parasailing or hire a personal watercraft. As an owner of a very popular vacation home I usually have to check out of our own home several hours before our flight leaves Florida. Since first becoming a villa owner nearly 8 years ago I have always wanted to be in Florida for Thanksgiving. I think that was mainly because it was celebration we did not have in Britain and was quite fascinated to see what it was all about. I also think I had had my appetite well and truly wetted with the excellent comedy 'Trains, Planes and Automobiles' as the hapless Steve Martin tries desperately to get back home for his family's Thanksgiving despite every obstacle in the book. This year I had the opportunity to come out again for a late visit and seized it with both hands-well you would wouldn't you-even if it was just to get away from Britain's freezing November temperatures. Planet Hollywood
I love movies so was really happy on our last trip to visit and dine at Planet Hollywood in West Side at Downtown Disney. We planned our visit after spending the day at Typhoon Lagoon, which is directly opposite Downtown Disney. We took a change of clothes with us so we could shower and change when the park closed. We asked for seating on the top floor as the ?giant ball? houses different levels, with props hanging from the ceiling all the way down through the restaurant. The props and memorabilia that surrounded us included the bus from Speed and the suit from Tron. Also displayed were several larger props including the motorbikes from Passenger 57 and Officer and a Gentleman. We could not find labels for all the props but the staff are really helpful and will tell you the film a prop is from if you ask. When you think of Florida you think of happy times, magical memories, great thrill rides and what to do next. You hardly ever think of the usual precautions you may take when travelling in Europe for instance. However, unfortunately in Florida as in the rest of the world there are people who have no problems taking things that do not belong to them. Kobe Japanese Steakhouse - Teppanyaki
We were lucky enough to be introduced to Kobe?s Japanese Steakhouse by some American friends of ours. At first we were a little unsure as they explained that it was a meal and show (not our sort of thing). They also said it was very ?touristy? but fun, but we bit the bullet and agreed to go. Upon arrival we were seated in the bar area and I was recommend the Plum wine, not been one to shy from alcohol I eagerly agreed. It was like nectar, sweet, refreshing and very easy on the taste buds (if not too easy as a few more glasses followed! ). Located next door to Disney Marketplace, West Side offers a great mix of shopping, places to eat and entertainment. At one end of this area of Downtown Disney is the fabulous Cirque du Soleil big top. It is the permanent home to La Nouba, a breathtaking, flamboyant show that the whole family can enjoy. This is a traditional American Mall it is fully enclosed and air conditioned, so a great place to spend a day if you want to get out of the heat or if you get a rainy afternoon and with a fantastic two hundred and sixty shops to choose from there?s no reason to ever get bored! It has been open just over 20 years but was completely renovated in 1999. It has a good selection of department stores as the anchors of the Mall, they include, Dillards, Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy?s, Sears, Nordstrom, JC Penney. For a shopping experience that?s similar to the shopping you find at Mount Dora, the ?Shoppes at Van Buren? might be just what you?re looking for and are a lot closer to ?home?. Best Time to Go to Disney
Many visitors to Florida can only go in the school holidays and when this happens it is best to plan well ahead. Flights from Europe are often cheaper when booked long in advance and some villas offer discounted rentals for early bookings. If you have plans to dine at a Disney restaurant it is also wise to book as soon as they starting taking reservations. This is often 180 days prior to the date you require. Daytime Entertainment on the Boardwalk
For several years we used to pass the Boardwalk always saying next visit we would make time to go there. We really did not realise just how much there was to do whether you visited at day or night. There are lots of activities whether you go during the day or at night. Here you can find midway games, jugglers, entertainers, food vendors and magic shows. Each time we go we tend to either spend a day or an evening there. During the day we find that Surrey bike riding along the Boardwalk is a real must. This bike rental is a great activity for families or groups of friends. Renting these pretty, fringed surrey bikes is available until 10. 30 every night. You are allowed to pedal around Crescent Lake over to the Yacht and Beach Club, or the Swan/Dolphin.
