Trip to Niagara
Last time we where at our villa, we decided that we would take a trip to Niagara Falls, the Canadian side, something that we really had wanted to see for a long time. Our trip began at Orlando International Airport on a flight to Atlanta Airport where we had an hour and a half break before we caught our next flight to Buffalo, upon arrival at Buffalo Airport, we had arranged a surprise for our families and hired a Limo to take us on over the bridge to Niagara itself. Our flight was delayed so we arrived in Niagara at around 12. 30am so the lights on the falls were off and although we could hear the noise of the waterfall, we could not see them, so we retired to our hotel. Next day, we had arranged for a guided tour, we had our breakfast at Perkins and then returned to the hotel to wait for the tour bus, what a fantastic way to see what is offered in Niagara, we visited the Spanish Cable Car, over the Whirlpool, went up one of the towers to get an aerial view of the falls and rode t...
Planet Hollywood
Are you going to Downtown Disney, while you are there, perhaps catching a show at the Cirque du Solei, perhaps you have gone early to have a look around and maybe get a meal before the show, have you tried Planet Hollywood, if not give it a go, there are always queues to eat there and you would be well advised to get your name on the list, ask for an approximate time when you can expect to be seated, and then to go for a look around the shops, clubs and side cubicles. Maybe your children are into Lego and want to go and see the dinosaur made from Lego that is coming out of the lake before going into the shop to see if they can prize any money from your pockets, walk around the lake and have a look at the side cubicles selling such things as oysters with pearls in them, perhaps into the Disney store to see what is new, but finally arriving back at Planet Hollywood to get your seat. Go up the flight of stairs and into the globe that is on stilts and surrounded by water. Once inside, ...
The Hard Rock Cafe
The Hard Rock Café in Orlando is right between right between Universal Studios Orlando and Islands of Adventure and it?s an excellent place to go for a nice cool rest whilst eating. Take a look around at the pop memorabilia on the walls, mainly guitars, look at the room that has mainly Beatles memorabilia and soak in the atmosphere. What?s all that noise, oh, it?s someone?s birthday and all the waiters and waitresses are congregating to sing happy birthday to the person, all of the other diners join in too, what a lovely atmosphere. The food is good, ranging from salads to a full rack of ribs, steaks cooked as you like them and of course some of the biggest burgers that I have ever seen. Service is good and efficient and the waiting staff are colourful in what they do and in dealing with members of the public, however, there may be queues to get in. One little tip is to go in the shop and for $20, you can get a loyalty card which allows you preferential entry, dining tables and...
I Spy with my little eye ??.A Snowy Egret
I suppose many of us have seen various types of bird life as we journey to and from the airport on the way to our villa or holiday accommodation and even on our way to the Theme Parks, other Orlando tourist venues or just out for a shopping trip. One of the most common birds to be seen in Florida is the SNOWY EGRET /b a wading bird of the heron family with spectacular white plumage. You can easily identify it, it has black legs, bright yellow feet and a long thin neck, black bill and yellow markings around the eyes that turn red during the breeding season. The large yellow feet are used very effectively to stir up the water to flush out food from the mud. The Snowy Egret is a pretty bird weighing about 14 ounces, height about 24 inches and a wingspan of 38 inches. Both male and female look similar. In the past their feathers were used in hat making, this resulted in a decline in population numbers as many birds were hunted and killed for the long lace like feathers and plumes ...
Art at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport - Part 2
I wonder how many of us, as we rush from one part of an airport to another ever stop to look at the floor below our feet? Well, a recent visit to Dallas Fort Worth Airport, Texas, on our way to visit our beautiful villa in Orlando, gave us the opportunity to do just that. I suppose most of us have little time to stop and take in the airport environment. We are normally rushing from one terminal to another, gathering suitcases, finding our gate, sometimes with little time to spare. Certainly it is rare to have time to stop and look down. But a long stop-over at Dallas Fort Worth gave us time to view some of the splendid floors that adorn this large building. One of the most stunning is a medallion set into the floor by Gate D6-7. Called ?The Highest Power, ? it is 20 ft in diameter and features three horses flying through the journey of life. Each horse is a different colour. The yellow horse represents the power of God, the blue horse represents Mother Earth, and the red horse repr...
Cruising
One of the most relaxing holidays you can have is cruising; cruising on a ship that is. On the other hand it can be one of the busiest and most hectic. Either way it will be what you want it to be. There are an abundance of cruises from Florida ports. Tampa, Port Canaveral, Miami and Fort Lauderdale are all within driving distance from the Orlando area. The two nearest ports to Orlando are Tampa and Port Canaveral so if you were planning a cruise whilst staying in the Orlando area it would make sense to book from one of these ports if possible. Carnival cruises, the owners of Cunard and P and amp; O are probably the biggest player in Florida. You can do a 7 day cruise to the Caribbean and stay 7 days in a villa. You can even do a 3 or 4 day cruise just for a change of scenery and location. Carnival fun ships offer a range of cruises around the Eastern and Western Caribbean to places like Jamaica, Mexico and Grand Cayman. They call them fun ships because they really are great fun t...
Art at Dallas Fort Worth Airport - Part 3
Airport terminals can be the most sterile of spaces, but art can transform them into meaningful and exciting places. Nowhere is this more true than at Dallas Fort Worth Airport in Texas. This modern and expanding airport is home to a wide range of art forms, from sculptures to terrazzo, from enormous paintings to magnificent floors. Having recently spent several hours in this airport we were able to enjoy and experience some of the unique art exhibits that are displayed throughout this terminal building. It would be difficult to ignore the huge cast bronze, acrylic and terra cotta sculpture called ?Standing Ovation? by Anitra Blayton, which dominates the entrance to the south ticketing hall. This 3-D form rises from the floor and is made of a dense tower of life-sized hands, which appear to be clapping. Each of these pairs of hands is cast from different people of all ages and backgrounds. From a distance it looks like a giant flower, 16 feet tall. It is green at its base, then white...
Suggestions for Your Last Day in Florida
Wherever you are staying you are likely to find that you need to leave your villa by 10 or 11 o?clock but may not need to get to the airport until 3 or 4 o?clock. If you want to enjoy your villa for an extra few hours it is worth checking with the owner if you can have an extension but this will not be possible if there are guests arriving the next day. Your decision will depend on the nature of your group but here are some suggestions. If you are checking in at Downtown Disney (Travellers with Virgin) then if you haven?t been there during your stay you can do some last minute shopping and enjoy a meal without moving the car. Alternatively you might like to just move a little distance to the West and Visit Disney?s Boardwalk. This is part of the Disney Boardwalk Hotel but visitors are welcome. You can self-park your car in the visitor?s car park and then walk down to the Boardwalk. It is like stepping back in time to the 1950?s British Seaside, except that there is a lake instead o...
AQUATICA
If you are visiting Florida after March the 1st 2008, you are in for a rare treat; because the long awaited Aquatica should be open. There is a soft opening planned for march and a grand opening will happen in april. What is it? well it is an awesome new water park (owned by Seaworld) situated on International Drive, opposite Seaworld itself. This s a truly unique park that cannot be matched anywhere else in the world, This park is to have lush tropical vegetation and birds and is inspired by New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand. The total area is some 58 acres. Here you will float through a river of exotic fish or race through rolling rapids There are 2 amazing 300 foot tube slides that will tip you into a lagoon full of friendly dolphins! This is the ride Seaworld are most excited about, so do not miss this one! The double wave pool is state of the art and contain 860, 000 gallons of water. One lagoon is for the faint hearted (like me) and has gentle rolling surf; the other ...
Weeki Wachee to become a State Park
The 27th of January, 2008 was an historic day for the tiny city of Weeki Wachi; Mayor Robyn Anderson put her signature to a document that finally made Weeki Wachee Springs a Florida State Park. The handover will take place on November the 1st 2008 and they will start a program to bring this declining attraction back to its former glory. This was rubber stamped by Swiftmud the following tuesday. Swiftmud leases the land that Weeki Wachee stands on. The park was sold for a nominal $10. Robyn is also the general manager of Weeki Wachee and she said that the staff have unanimously welcomed the news of the take over. The States departmant have announced that they have no plans to scrap the most known feature of the springs; the mermaids. Robyn will remain as assistant manager In these days of the ever burgeoning Disney and Universal parks, it is easy to forget that Weeki Wachee was once the foremost attraction in the whole of Florida. Weeki Wachee is sitated 50 miles north of Tampa in ...
Before You Fly
Having travelled to Florida on many occasions, I would like to pass on a few tips that may help the un-initiated. Most flights to Florida are around midday so you need to check in around three hours before the flight, that?s around 9 in the morning. Don?t forget you still need to add another three quarters of an hour or so to find the parking company you?ve booked and get checked into the car park and catch the bus to the airport. If you are driving to Gatwick and have an early check in, assuming you are not checking in online, depending on how far you have to travel you will be travelling in the rush hour if you are flying on a weekday. Accidents and road closures can even happen on a weekend. To save a very early start and the stress of a drive not knowing what the traffic is going to be like it may help to book into a hotel the night before your flight and drive down the night before. One of the hotels near to the airport has sales of rooms that can sleep up to four, for £26 a...
Grayton Beach
Grayton Beach State Park is situated in Walton County, mid way between Destin and Panama City Beach. This is yet another of the Gulf Coasts gorgeous white sandy beaches, with the added extra of a lovely lake, rolling sea oat dunes and good walking trails. This beach is part of an area also known as The Emerald Coast. The first known residents here were the Choctaw Indians followed by American Pioneers who lived along side the prolific wild hogs. Then in 1885, Major Charles T Gray built a house here. At this time, most of the area was owned by the Federal Government. Since the soil is too sandy to farm, this area was slow to grow, but in 1890, 2 other army families joined the major and together they planned the layout of the roads. The only building left from those times is found at the end of cr 238 and is called "Wash a way" so plan a detour to visit this historic place. The Emerald Coast boasts 20 miles of gorgeous beach and oyster shell roads. Most of the houses are made o...
FRED GANNON ROCKY BAYOU
Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park is situated in Niceville (now who could resist going to Niceville? ) This park was once a bombing practice range and is named after a man called Fred Gannon, whose efforts started turning this old range into the park we know and love today. The best part of this attractive State Park is the Choctawatchee Bay which is a magnet for anglers, boaters and kayakers. It is located at the very north end of the park. Puddin Head Lake can be found right in the middle of the park and is a good spot for fresh water fishing. If you have visited this park in the past, you will be delighted to see all the improvements they have been making. These include a pedestrian bridge over Puddin Head Lake, making access a lot easier a playgound for the children and a shop that sells fishing essentials and souvenirs. There are 3 nature trails here: The Sand Pine Trail goes round Puddin Head Lake; here you will find many aquatic plants. The Red Cedar Trail lives up to...
HONTOON ISLAND
Hontoon Island State Park is situated in Volusia County on the St Johns River. It is 6 miles west of Deland, just off SR44. Hontoon has been occupied for many thousands of years and has a rich history. It can only be accessed by electric ferry or boat and has a total of 1650 all natural acres to explore. The first known dwellers of this island were Timucuan Indians. You can see some wonderful carvings that they have bequethed the island in memory of their time there: an otter, a bird and a totem pole. After their occupancy, the island has variously been used as a Pioneer home stead, a yard for boats, a fishing centre and a ranch. The State bought the land in 1967 and have developed into the wonderful island that we enjoy today. If you fancy a side trip away from your luxurious villa, then you can stay in very basic accomodation on the island; no air con, no cooking facilities and no loo (though there are loos and hot showers elsewhere on the island) Make the visitor Center your fi...
FORT ZACHARY
Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is situated in Truman Annex, Key West. South Florida. Here you will find the biggest haul of cannons in the whole of America. This fort was named in honour of President Zachary Taylor: he died in the year that the fort started its construction (1845) However, it was a long time in building, due to various factors including disease, hurricane and problems with the supply of materials; in fact it would be 21 years before all 3 storeys were completed. During the Civil War it was commandeered by the Union army. The whole of Key West had a vital role to play in the hostilities due to their defensive position in Florida. They were able to intercept blockade running vessels from their vantage point and detain the confederates. The cannons had a 3 mile range and prevented the enemy from seizing Key West and the fort throughout the hostilities. Fort Taylor was only finally finished in 1866; apart from its defence properties, there were flushing lo...
GEORGE CRADY FISHING PIER
George Crady Bridge fishing pier was named after a state representative of the same name who was a keen supporter of the State Parks department. This park is located in Jacksonville on the Nassau / Ouval border and crosses tha Nassau Sound. This is considered to be one of the best places to fish in the whole of north east Florida and believe me, that is saying something! There is no traffic allowed on this bridge, so you can be assured of a peaceful days fishing; and you will have a good days catch! In the spring and autumn, there are vast numbers of trout and red fish (though these are present in fewer numbers all year round) Head for the small grass flats to find a variety of other fish. The state record flounder was caught here, so that is a challenge for you! You may also catch jacks, drums and tarpon. Tarpon is greek for large eye and tarpon certainly have 2 of them, along with a large mouth. They are usually found in warm, coastal waters or they will swim up stream. They ar...
FORT PIERCE INLET
Fort Pierce Inlet State Park is situated 4 miles east of Ft Pierce in St Lucie County. There are 340 acres of sand dunes, beaches and coastal hammock and you can access via the north causeway. It is so called after a fort constructed in the second seminole war by a colonel Pierce. However, this was not the end of its military history as 140. OOO troops rehearsed for D. Day here and during the 2nd world war it was also used by the U. S. Navy to train their frogmen. The navy under water team are honoured by the naming of one area "Dynamite Point" There was once a natural inlet to the north east of Jack Island; however, this was closed in at the end of the 20th century and a new one put in at Fort Pierce. Jack Island Preserve forms the larger part of this island and the smaller part is on the Atlantic Ocean. The beach is very pretty and you can find lots of shells. You may dive at the reef and the clear waters make for great snorkelling. There are 4 board walks that lead you on to ...
GAMBLE ROGERS STATE PARK
Gamble Rogers State Park is located 3 miles south of Flagler Beach , 18 miles north of Daytona and 30 miles south of St Augustine. It is on Floridas cooler Atlantic Coast. Gamble Rogers was a well known folk singer and actor who sadly died on October 10th 1991. He perished attempting to rescue a drowning man in St Augustine. The park has been justifiably named in his honour. You may have heard Gamble Rogers voice at The Space Center, since he narrated a film for them. He was a native of Florida and there is an annual Gamble Rogers festival to commemorate his life and career. This State Park sits rather nicely between a lovely beach and an intra coastal water way and covers 144 acres. There is a good quarter mile nature trail and a boat basin with a ramp in the intra coastal area. You can hire kayaks from the parks concession holder, Kayaks of Flagler Beach From Spring to late summer you will see the turtles who have come to lay their eggs; there are green. leather back and logge...
GAINSEVILLE HAWTHORNE STATE TRAIL
Gainseville Hawthorne State Trail stretches from Gainseville to Hawthorne. This once was the site for goods and passenger trains carrying fruit and vegetables as well as people from the 1860s. The State Parks department took over the land in 1988 and worked hard to create the trail which we can travel today. Gainseville, Aluchua County and Florida Trails program contributed towards this end. There are 17 natural communities here; look out for the sink holes along your way and catcus make their home here too. They have used the old rail tracks to make the trail which measures 16 miles. These are considered to be among the best trails in Florida (and there are a fair few to choose from! ) If you are lucky. you may see bison here; bison were common in Florida until the 1970s, but the real decimation took place in the nineteenth century. Bison seemed hell bent on destroying the railway tracks and a programme to shoot them meant that their numbers plummeted from 60 million to 541 in less...
HENDERSON BEACH
Henderson Beach State Park is situated east of Destin on the U. S 98 in Floridas Pan Handle. This park is named after the Henderson family who lived here til 1983 and they were so keen to see this area preseved and protected that they sold it to the State Parks department for just over $13000000. A remarkably small sum, even then. The beach here is exceptional and the sun sets are magnificent. High Dunes and stunted pines also add interest to this stunning place. The Parks department have put in boardwalks that make accessing the beaches easy and there is even a special wheelchair you can use to take disabled people right on to the beach. Terns, pelicans and laughing gulls are some of the shore birds you may see at the beach. The gulls are so called because of their distinctive cry. . . ha ha ha! They inhabit coastal areas and live mainly off small prey. You may also see turtles nesting in the sand; they mostly emerge at night, but it is not unusual to spot them in the day time. It...
HIGHLANDS HAMMOCK
Highlands Hammock State Park is situated 4 miles west of Sebring, just off the U. S. 27, on Hammock Rd. At one time, this land was about to be used for farming, however, some local people who were concerned about the enviroment clubbed together to buy the acres to preserve it. In 1935, it became the first of 4 State Parks in Florida. The lands were worked on by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Recently, about $275, 000 has been spent providing an inter active visitor experience with a video area, lots of information and you can also listen to some of Roosevelts fireside chats on a vintage radio. A hammock is defined as a fertile area that is higher than its surroundings and it also has hard wood vegetation. Here also is cypress, swamp and a botanical garden. You can take an informative tour on a tram and go turtle or alligator spotting. These take place on saturdays and sundays at 1. p. m. and 2. 30. pm and tuesday to friday at 1. p. m. only, so time your visit carefully. These t...
GASPARILLA ISLAND
Gasparilla Island State Park is in Lee County on Floridas south west (Gulf) coast. It is near Boca Grande and is one of the chain of Gulf Coast barrier islands. According to Folklore, it was so named after a pirate called Jose Gaspar, who was supposed to have hidden his booty on the island. However, it is now thought to have been called after a missionary of the same name and this does indeed seem more likely. This park is notable for its light house that was constructed from wood way back in 1890; this was erected to guide the ships safely into Charlotte Harbour and Boca Grande. It was closed by the coast guard in 1966 and 6 years later was donated to the county. It was not until 1985 that restoration work started and this got the lights working again. There is a good self tour of the light house museum and you can also see The Amory Memorial Chapel which was constructed in the 1950s to serve the local people. This has also been restored and is well well scheduling in to your da...
GAMBLE PLANTATION
Gamble Plantation Historic State Park is located in Ellerton, South Florida, north east of Bradenton. This makes it a feasible day out from your villa in the Disney area or by the Gulf Coast. This was the home of Major Robert Gamble way back in the mid 19th century; he had fought in the Seminole war and afterwards determined to create a sugar plantation on the Manatee River. He had some experience of this kind of farming since he had run a sugar plantation with his brother in Tallahasse (a much more hospitable area for such ventures)but despite this, he was set on the idea of building a plantation in this area and made a great success of the plan. During its hey day there were 35000 acres of sugar plantation here, which is pretty impressive. He had built the mansion in the antebellum style and also added grapes, citrus fruits and olives to his crops. However, having weathered good and bad seasons, he decided to sell up 1n 1856 During the war the sugar mill was destroyed and the P...
"Are we nearly there yet?"
This is something that always makes our family laugh when we recall the story. It happened on our first trip to Orlando in Aug. 2004, we had been there about a week and had decided to give the parks a rest and do a days shopping. It was a gloriously sunny day and we had decided to go to the Beltz shopping outlets on International Drive. There were 5 of us in the car, husband, wife and 3 children Fern was 10, Josh 13 and Charlotte 16, needless to say I was driving (Dad). I suppose we had to travel about 20 miles before we hit the bottom end International Drive, traffic was not too bad at that end, but anyone who knows International Drive knows that it gets very busy. There are lots of things to see on I-Drive, Wonder Works, Ripley?s Believe It Or Not, Wet?n Wild to name but a few, we saw them all, from the front anyway. We only had about 4 or 5 more miles to go, but the further we went along the denser the traffic got until in was nose to tail and grinding along at a snails pace. ...
